HBOND-2017

The XXII Horizons in Hydrogen Bonding Research conference was organized by the University of Jyväskylä (Finland) last September 10-14, 2017. The meeteing attracted a wide range of researchers interested in theoretical and experimental aspects related to hydrogen bonding. Alberto Lesarri presented an oral talk and two posters at the conference. Two meetings in Finland this year …

Caminati Festschrift

Category : General News , Group News

Jens-Uwe Grabow, Alberto Lesarri and Sonia Melandri acted as Guest Editors of two special volumes of the Journal of Molecular Spectroscopy dedicated to honour Prof. Walther Caminati on his retirement, with the title “Spectroscopy and inter/intramolecular dynamics in honor of Walther Caminati”. Prof. Caminati is one of the most important contributors to the development of rotational spectroscopy worldwide, publishing more than 400 articles in his career, with particular attention to molecules and molecular complexes presenting large amplitude internal dynamics.

In the picture issues 335 and 337 of the Journal of Molecular Spectroscopy and Prof. Caminati.

Kisiel visit

Category : Group News

Prof. Dr. Zbigniew Kisiel, a leading figure in rotational spectroscopy and researcher of the Institute of Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, visited the UVa in May, 8-19, 2017. Prof. Kisiel was invited by the UVa Doctoral School to give the course “Analysis of broadband rotational spectra” which was attended by several Ph.D. students, Postdocs and interested staff of the Department. Prof. Kisiel mantains the useful web site “Programs for Rotational Spectroscopy“.

A picture of Prof. Kisiel in our lab is shown below.

China visit

Category : Group News

A new microwave Spectroscopy group has been created at the University of Chongqing by two chinese researchers at the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engeering, Qian Gou and Gang Feng. Alberto Lesarri and Jens-Uwe Grabow were invited to visit the lab  in the wonderful Huxi campus in Chongqing last August for the first operations of the new spectrometer. The University of Chongqing was founded in 1929 and comprises 4 campus. Alberto gave a talk reviewing the applications of rotational Spectroscopy to structural Chemistry (August 5th) and a seminar on spectroscopic software tools (August 8th). Excellent hospitality in Chongqing and great future for Spectroscopy in China.

Enflurane published

The conformational landscape of enflurane was published in Chemistry – A European Journal. This report closes a series or rotational investigations on volatile and injection anesthetics, including among others sevoflurane, isoflurane and propofol. Enflurane has three distinct rotamers in the gas phase, originated by the internal rotation of the terminal chlorine atom. The presence of hyperfine interations and different isotopologues resulted in a crowded spectrum, as can be observed in the figure below.figure-ethrane-web

Mirror Images in Molecules

Category : Conferences , Group News

The workshop on “Mirror Images in Molecules: Spectroscopy Features“, was organized by the Walther Caminati group at the University of Bologna last May 27-28, 2016. The conference united several researchers interested in the connections between Chirality and Spectroscopy. Talks at the conference included several people from Valladolid and Bilbao: Alberto Lesarri, Juan Carlos López and Iciar Uriarte.

Jose A. Fernandez talk

Category : Group News

Our research partner José Andrés Fernández gave an inspiring talk to Chemistry degree UVa students on non-covalent forces last March 18, 2016. The title of the talk was “Non-Covalent Interactions: How to Sink a Ship with a Piece of Ice“. José Andrés runs the laser spectroscopy and mass spectrometry lab at the University of the Basque country in Bilbao (UPV-EHU) and at the same time leads a team on MALDI imaging. Our collaboration in high resolution spectroscopy now spans more than 10 years and three national projects, bringing together rotational and double-resonance electronic and vibrational laser spectroscopies.

Caminati visit

Category : Group News

Walther Caminati visited the UVA the first week of December to discuss common research. Professor Caminati works at the Università di Bologna (Italy) and is author of more than 350 publications. He has explored multiple chemical problems using rotational spectroscopy, in particular molecules with large-amplitude tunnelling motions. He previously enjoyed a sabatic year at the UVa in 2005.

Grabow visit

Category : Group News

Jens-Uwe Grabow visited our lab the last weeks of November. Prof. Grabow (Uni. Hannover) is a world expert in rotational spectroscopy. Some of his interests include the relation between Spectroscopy and particle physics, large-amplitude motions, and new spectroscopy techniques. The visit continues a long-standing collaboration with the Hannover group.
